The Binary Large Object of Blob Architecture

08.05.2018
Blob architecture is a type of wavy, curvy building design without traditional edges or traditional symmetric form. It is made possible by computer-aided-design (CAD) software. American-born architect and philosopher Greg Lynn (b. 1964) is credited with coining the phrase, although Lynn himself claims the name comes from a software feature that creates Binary Large Objects.
The name has stuck, often disparagingly, in various forms, including blobism, blobismus, and blobitecture. Examples of Blob Architecture
These buildings have been called early examples of blobitecture:
Selfridges Department Store (pictured on this page) in Birmingham, United Kingdom
Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain (designed by Frank Gehry)
Xanadu Houses in Kissimmee, Florida
The Sage Gateshead in Newcastle, UK (designed by Norman Foster)
Admirant Entrance Building in Eindhoven, Netherlands (designed by Massimiliano Fuksas)
Galaxy SOHO in Beijing, China (designed by Zaha Hadid)
The Experience Music Project (EMP) in Seattle, Washington (designed by Frank Gehry)
CAD Design on Steroids
Mechanical drawing and drafting changed radically with the advent of desktop computing. CAD software was one of the very first applications to be used in offices transitioning to personal computer workstations in the early 1980s. Wavefront Technologies developed the OBJ file (with the .obj file extension) to geometrically define three-dimensional models. Greg Lynn and Blob Modeling
Ohio-born Greg Lynn came of age during the digital revolution. "The term Blob modelling was a module in Wavefront software at the time," says Lynn, "and it was an acronym for Binary Large Object — spheres that could be collected to form larger composite forms. At the level of geometry and mathematics, I was excited by the tool as it was great for making large-scale single surfaces out of many small components as well as adding detailed elements to larger areas."
Other architects who were the first to experiment with and use blob modeling include the American Peter Eisenman, British architect Norman Foster, Italian architect Massimiliano Fuksas, Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid and Patrik Schumacher, and Jan Kaplický and Amanda Levete.
Architectural movements, such as the 1960s Archigram led by architect Peter Cook or the convictions of the deconstructionists, are often associated with blob architecture. Movements, however, are about ideas and philosophy. Blob architecture is about a digital process — using mathematics and computer technologies to design. Mathematics and Architecture
Ancient Greek and Roman designs were based on geometry and architecture. Roman architect Marcus Vitruvius observed relationships of human body parts — the nose to the face, the ears to the head — and documented the symmetry and proportion. Today's architecture is more calculus-based using digital tools.
Calculus is the mathematical study of changes. Greg Lynn argues that since the Middle Ages architects have used calculus — "the Gothic moment in architecture was the first time that force and motion was thought of in terms of form." In Gothic details such as ribbed vaulting "you can see that the structural forces of the vaulting get articulated as lines, so you're really actually seeing the expression of structural force and form."
"Calculus is also a mathematics of curves. So, even a straight line, defined with calculus, is a curve. It's just a curve without inflection. So, a new vocabulary of form is now pervading all design fields: whether it's automobiles, architecture, products, etc., it's really being affected by this digital medium of curvature. The intricacies of scale that come out of that — you know, in the example of the nose to the face, there's a fractional part-to-whole idea. With calculus, the whole idea of subdivision is more complex, because the whole and the parts are one continuous series." —  Greg Lynn, 2005
Today's CAD has enabled the building of designs that were once theoretical and philosophical movements. Powerful BIM software now allows designers to visually manipulate parameters, knowing that Computer Aided Manufacturing software will keep track of the building components and how they are to be assembled. Perhaps because of the unfortunate acronym used by Greg Lynn, other architects such as Patrik Schumacher have coined a new word for new software

An Introduction To JavaScript Blobs and File Interface

An Introduction To JavaScript Blobs and File Interface
What is a Blob?
A blob object represents a chuck of bytes that holds data of a file. But a blob is not a reference to a actual file, it may seem like it is.
A blob has its size and MIME type just like a file has. Blob data is stored in the memory or filesystem depending on the browser and blob size. A blob can be used like a file wherever we use files.
Most APIs for working with blobs are asynchronous. But synchronous versions of APIs are also available so that they can be used in Web Workers.
Content of a blob can be read as ArrayBuffer and therefore it makes blobs very handy to store binary data.

Techopedia explains Binary Large Object (BLOB)

Techopedia explains Binary Large Object (BLOB)
Binary large objects are primarily used in all database software. Generally, database software classifies binary large objects into two types: semi-structured data and unstructured data. XML files are categorized as semi-structured data, whereas images and multimedia data are unstructured data types. Both of these BLOBs are generally not interpretable by the database.
BLOBs are used mainly for storing pictures, sounds and multimedia files, so they have a comparatively larger size than most data types and can contain up to gigabytes of data. Besides databases, the term BLOB may also refer to a visual image in computer graphics that has a unique shape.

Posted by: Margaret Rouse WhatIs.com Contributor(s): Tom Parker
  1. In computers, a BLOB (binary large object), pronounced BLAHB and sometimes spelled in all lower case, is a large file, typically an image or sound file, that must be handled (for example, uploaded, downloaded, or stored in a database) in a special way because of its size. According to Eric Raymond, the main idea about a BLOB is that the handler of the file (for example, the database manager) has no way of understanding the file in order to figure out how to deal with it - it might as well be a large piece of coal, but there it is and now what? Other sources emphasize that the term was coined to refer to big data objects and to connote the problems they sometimes present in handling them. One application that deals with BLOBs is the database storage of large multimedia objects, such as films and television programs.
  2. In computer graphics, a blob (lower case) is a visual object that, according to one user of the Persistence of Vision ray tracer, a freeware image creation tool, has "an interesting shape type" that is flexible and amenable to animation.
  3. In general, a blob is an amorphous and undefinable object. There are blobs in astronomy as well as in unidentified flying object studies. There was a science-fiction movie called "The Blob."

Blobs, Layers, and Nets: anatomy of a Caffe model
A Blob is a wrapper over the actual data being processed and passed along by Caffe, and also under the hood provides synchronization capability between the CPU and the GPU. Mathematically, a blob is an N-dimensional array stored in a C-contiguous fashion.
Caffe stores and communicates data using blobs. Blobs provide a unified memory interface holding data; e.g., batches of images, model parameters, and derivatives for optimization.
Blobs conceal the computational and mental overhead of mixed CPU/GPU operation by synchronizing from the CPU host to the GPU device as needed. Memory on the host and device is allocated on demand (lazily) for efficient memory usage.
The conventional blob dimensions for batches of image data are number N x channel K x height H x width W. Blob memory is row-major in layout, so the last / rightmost dimension changes fastest. For example, in a 4D blob, the value at index (n, k, h, w) is physically located at index ((n * K + k) * H + h) * W + w.
  • Number / N is the batch size of the data. Batch processing achieves better throughput for communication and device processing. For an ImageNet training batch of 256 images N = 256.
  • Channel / K is the feature dimension e.g. for RGB images K = 3.
Note that although many blobs in Caffe examples are 4D with axes for image applications, it is totally valid to use blobs for non-image applications. For example, if you simply need fully-connected networks like the conventional multi-layer perceptron, use 2D blobs (shape (N, D)) and call the InnerProductLayer (which we will cover soon).
Parameter blob dimensions vary according to the type and configuration of the layer. For a convolution layer with 96 filters of 11 x 11 spatial dimension and 3 inputs the blob is 96 x 3 x 11 x 11. For an inner product / fully-connected layer with 1000 output channels and 1024 input channels the parameter blob is 1000 x 1024.
For custom data it may be necessary to hack your own input preparation tool or data layer. However once your data is in your job is done. The modularity of layers accomplishes the rest of the work for you.
